Every season tells a story, but for Mothers of Murdered Angels (MOMA), the summer of 2026 was nothing short of transformational.
It was a season filled with celebration, education, recognition, and hope. Families came together. Children discovered their voices. Community leaders were honored. New partnerships were formed. Most importantly, countless lives were touched through MOMA’s unwavering commitment to turning pain into purpose.
What began years ago as one mother’s response to unimaginable tragedy has grown into one of the region’s most impactful nonprofit organizations, providing hope, advocacy, and support to families affected by gun violence.
This summer represented another milestone in that journey.
Celebrating Five Years of Impact at MOMA
One of the highlights of the summer was MOMA’s 5th Annual Community Impact Awards Gala, an unforgettable evening dedicated to honoring individuals and organizations that are making a meaningful difference throughout the community.
The gala has become one of MOMA’s signature events because it celebrates something incredibly important: the people who choose to stand up for others.
Community leaders, educators, law enforcement professionals, nonprofit organizations, elected officials, business leaders, and advocates gathered to celebrate those who dedicate their lives to creating safer neighborhoods and stronger families.
The evening wasn’t simply an awards ceremony. It was a celebration of resilience. Guests heard inspiring stories of survival, courage, and transformation. Families affected by gun violence were reminded that they are not forgotten, while supporters had the opportunity to invest directly into programs that provide counseling, advocacy, relocation assistance, legal support, and emergency resources. Every award presented represented another example of what is possible when communities unite around compassion instead of fear.
The gala also served as one of MOMA’s largest annual fundraising efforts, allowing the organization to continue expanding its services and reaching more families throughout North Texas.
Investing in the Next Generation
While advocacy remains central to MOMA’s mission, prevention has always been equally important. Throughout the summer, MOMA continued investing in youth through educational programs and community engagement initiatives designed to inspire leadership, kindness, and nonviolence. These programs created safe spaces where young people could learn, grow, and discover that their voices matter.
Children participated in activities focused on:
Leadership development
Character building
Bullying prevention
Conflict resolution
Community responsibility
Positive decision-making
Rather than simply discussing the problems surrounding violence, MOMA encourages young people to become part of the solution. Each workshop reminded students that they possess the ability to change their schools, neighborhoods, and future through compassion, courage, and leadership. These experiences also allowed families to connect with MOMA outside of times of crisis, strengthening relationships that continue throughout the year.
Empowering Young Voices Through Competition
Another exciting highlight of the summer was the continued success of the MOMA Competition, which challenged youth to think critically, creatively, and compassionately.
The competition gave students an opportunity to express themselves while exploring topics that encourage positive change within their communities. Programs like these reinforce one of MOMA’s core beliefs:
Children are not just the future—they are leaders today.
By encouraging youth to use their creativity and intellect, MOMA continues to inspire confidence while helping students understand that every voice has value. Parents, educators, and community members celebrated the remarkable ideas presented by participants, many of whom demonstrated wisdom well beyond their years. Watching young people confidently share their perspectives reminded everyone why MOMA remains committed to youth development alongside victim advocacy.
Turning Community Support Into Lasting Change
None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the incredible support of volunteers, sponsors, donors, community partners, and dedicated board members. Throughout the summer, individuals from every corner of the community stepped forward to support MOMA’s mission. Businesses partnered with MOMA. Volunteers donated countless hours. Sponsors invested financially. Community leaders opened doors for new collaborations.
Every act of generosity strengthened the organization’s ability to serve more families.
Together, these partnerships continue proving that ending violence requires an entire community working together.
A Historic Achievement for Founder Melinda Hamilton
Perhaps one of the most exciting announcements of the summer came when Melinda Hamilton, Founder and Executive Director of Mothers of Murdered Angels, was selected as a finalist in the Fort Worth Business Plan Competition.
This prestigious recognition represents far more than a personal accomplishment. It validates the tremendous work MOMA has accomplished over the past five years and acknowledges the organization’s potential for continued growth and sustainability.
The Fort Worth Business Plan Competition recognizes visionary entrepreneurs and innovative organizations whose ideas have the potential to create significant economic and social impact.
Being selected as a finalist places Melinda among an elite group of changemakers working to transform their communities.
For MOMA, this opportunity represents:
Increased visibility
Strategic growth opportunities
Expanded partnerships
Access to business mentoring
Potential funding opportunities
Greater long-term sustainability
Most importantly, it demonstrates that nonprofit organizations built on compassion can also become powerful engines for innovation and community transformation.
Leadership Rooted in Experience
Melinda Hamilton’s leadership has always been deeply personal. Having experienced unimaginable loss herself, she understands firsthand what grieving families need most.
Her vision has never been limited to providing immediate assistance. Instead, she has built MOMA into an organization focused on long-term healing, prevention, advocacy, education, and community empowerment. Every new milestone—from hosting successful galas to expanding youth programming to competing alongside leading entrepreneurs—reflects her commitment to building an organization that creates lasting change. The Business Plan Competition simply represents the next chapter in that journey.
Looking Toward the Future
As summer comes to a close, MOMA is already preparing for an exciting future. Plans are underway to expand services, increase community partnerships, strengthen youth initiatives, and continue advocating for families affected by violence.
Upcoming priorities include:
Expanding grief support programs

Each new initiative brings MOMA one step closer to achieving its vision of safer, healthier communities where every family has access to the support they deserve.
